The balls used to play on snooker tables were originally made of wood! These wooden balls were popular all the way through the sixteenth century. However, though they were marvelously crafted, these wooden balls were prone to warping and no matter how fine your snooker table was, a warped ball just didn’t lend itself to cultivating your expertise. In essence, what you had were excellent snooker tables with horrible balls. A terrible combination to be sure!

When the seventeenth century rolled around, those who made fine snooker tables knew they had to find a better ball. The answer, sadly for the elephant, was ivory snooker balls.

Although only the wealthiest members of society could afford them, and those whose passion for snooker exceeded financial sense, ivory snooker balls began to be found on my snooker tables the world over. By the mid to late eighteenth century, elephants had been hunted to the brink of extinction to satisfy our need to provide high quality balls for our snooker table.

A certain gentleman by the name of John Wesley Hyatt came to the rescue of the elephant and developed a nitrocellulose compound to replace ivory snooker and billiard balls in 1869.

However, while the new compound made for a beautiful round ball, there was a problem. If you hit the ball too hard, it could explode. Exploding balls were not conducive to any snooker table so it was back to the drawing board.

As every good snooker table who is worth his salt knows, the story has a happy ending. New balls made from Bakelite and phenolic resin were developed and could be produced with the finest finishes and were almost perfectly round. The key point was that they did not explode on impact which was a great relief to snooker table owners all over the world!

Now you can entertain your mates at your next private snooker tournament with the history and origin of the snooker ball!

Snooker is a Billiards style game enjoyed by millions of people around the World. It is another form of a billiard game that was thought to be created in the late 19th century. The game is played with a cue ball and 15 red balls that are worth one point each; there are also six different balls with different colors that will be used during the game of snooker.

This game was thought to come about when the British officers in India played it, starting with the regular game of billiards and modifying it to the game of snooker. The name of the game came about when an inexperienced player made a bad shot he was called a snooker.

To play the game of snooker you score points for the balls that you hit in, in order to win you need to score the most points in the frames that are played. It’s just a game of skill and being able to pocket the most points in a frame and in your turn. You do so by controlling your stroking speed and planning your shots ahead just like in any type of pool game you play. Also in snooker you should worry about aiming the ball too, with any type of skilled game it takes practice to get better at. Snooker is no exception to this rule; if you practice you will surely become a better player of the game of snooker.

Nowadays the game is played in Britain and Asia, not so much in the United States. But it is a challenging game to try, so if you get a chance at playing the game of snooker you should try it. If nothing else then to say that you’ve tried the game that isn’t that popular anymore. So good luck in playing the game of snooker!

Snooker is a Billiards style game enjoyed by millions of people around the World . How about a game of snooker? A surprisingly high number of people in North America have not heard of or played this great billards variation. In the rest of the world, most people choose to play snooker in billiards rooms and pool halls. And in terms of televised sports in England, snooker is one of the most highly viewed programs. It’s time snooker got more applause in North America, too. Snooker is a game that originated in Britain and came to be called “snooker,” it’s believed, after Neville Chamberlain referred to an army cadet as a snooker when his play wasn’t exactly up to snuff. “Snooker” by definition is a first year cadet; Chamberlain then referred to the rest of the men playing with him that they were all snookers. The name stuck to the game since then.

Newcomers may find it a bit intimidating to learn snooker, but the actual rules are not that complicated. Perhaps the most difficult part is setting the table properly: Snooker is played on 6 feet by 12 feet traditional billiards tables. A standard set of snooker balls is required. This set of 22 balls includes 15 red balls, 1 each of pink, yellow, brown, blue, black and green balls, and 1 white cue ball. The green, brown, yellow balls are placed at one end of the table, with a 6 inch gap between them. The blue ball goes in the dead center of the table. Pink splits the distance between the blue ball and the end of the table cushion on the far side. The black ball gets its own special spot, marked about 13 inches from the far cushion. The fifteen red balls are set in the triangle rack and placed immediately behind the pink ball. The apex (‘point’) of the red triangle should come as close as possible to the pink ball, without actually touching it.

Now the game can begin! One player “breaks” by striking the cue ball into the group of red balls. Whenever a player sinks a red ball, she or he is then allowed to try to sink any one of the six colored balls. There are points assigned to each colored ball: black is worth seven points; pink is worth six; blue counts five; brown is worth four; green counts for three; and the yellow ball is good for two points. After a colored ball is sunk, the points are added to the total, and the ball is retrieved and spotted back in its original spot on the table. There are also varieties of snooker that you can try out after you have mastered the basic game. As you can see, snooker is not terribly complex, but it can still be a drag on the fun part of the game for newcomers trying too remember all the rules, so it is best to have an experienced player explain the snooker rules to you.

Snooker has been a much beloved sport in England for more than a century, and with good reason. It is a fun game, that is easy to play, yet offers many skills challenges as one progresses. If your house already has a regulation-sized pool table, make sure you purchase a set of snooker balls and instructions soon, and add this fantastic game to your family’s activities. Snooker has never really caught fire in the United States but that doesn’t hold true for the United Kingdom. In fact, it is the most watched sporting event outside soccer, or football, as it’s known throughout most of the world.

There are a number of ways that you can outfit your game room with the latest and greatest in games and technology, in order to give your entire family a wonderful place to retreat. The best game room is going to come into fruition once you have a pool table and the right amount of billiard supplies to go along with it. However, with the price of such items today, how can you go about finding the right supplies without completely going over your budget? Billiards is a game of precision and all billiards related equipment and accessories are made with utmost care. While purchasing any billiards equipment and accessories, one has to ensure that quality items are purchased if one wants to improve the game and take it to a much higher level of competition.

It is no secret that the billiard game requires some equipment that can be expensive. However, over the years there have also been several great dealers that have popped up online. Now you can shop from the comfort of your very own home office and with the click of a button you can have all of the pool supplies that you need to get your game room up and running in full swing. You will simply need to make sure that you shop around for the best equipment that you can get shipped to you at a decent price, including billiard cues, billiard lights and billiard balls.

Purchasing a billiard table could eat up the better part of your budget for your game room. Hence, you have to choose wisely in terms of the style and color of the table top so that it will complement your decor. You can save on the cost of shipping if you buy from a local dealer. As well, you can enjoy bigger savings if you opt for a second hand table instead, and refurbish it to your satisfaction. If you are thinking of purchasing a second hand billiards table, then check around at pool halls in your area, to see if any of them have tables that they no longer want or need. You also might be able to find information on used pool tables and even billiard supplies in your local newspaper.

After buying the table, you will also have to look for such billiard equipment as cues, billiard ball sets, racks and pool chalk. Players attest that overhead billiard lighting is sometimes pivotal in getting a clean shot and making a score, so make sure that you also select the right lighting system. Keep in mind that enjoying a game of pool with your friends and family members is really what it’s all about. Don’t put to much pressure on yourself to make every shot and sink every ball every time. The more comfortable and relaxed you become with the cue stick and pool table the better you will become naturally. Soon you will be inviting everyone with you to enjoy a game of billiards. Who knows you may even invest in a billiards table of your own to enjoy with your friends and family.

Billiard balls are the round spheres used in all the different versions of billiards or pool. It might not seem like there would be much difference in the type of balls used for the game, but there actually is. Each different game for pool and billiards is played with a slightly different size and coating of ball. Billiard balls are available in a multitude of colors and these colors make them stand out beautifully against the green background of the pool table top. All other games that use a ball to play with, stick to one color. But in billiards you have a myriad of colors that are used. Some games are played with all the balls while others are played with a fixed number and color of balls.

In the USA, pocket billiards is known as pool, so the billiard balls are called pool balls. Pool balls are the most eye catching sports utilities. Most billiard halls believe that the wide range of colors of the billiard balls adds to the enjoyment of the game. You name it and you will probably find a billiard ball in that color from yellow, burgundy, black, orange, purple, blue to red; they have them all. And if all the mono colors were not enough they also have them in double colors. The contrast they create when placed against a green back give the game an aesthetic value of sorts.

To a regular person, the color of the balls is the only difference between them, but a professional pool player will be quick to point out the various differences between different types of pool balls. To a novice player, most of these may not make sense in the beginning but a seasoned player will tell you that the weight of a pool ball is what separates it from the other pool balls. The weight of the pool ball is largely responsible for its performance. As you get better at your game you will realize the difference that the weight of the pool ball makes to your game.

Most pool balls also have a number on them. The balls used for Carom are not numbered but others are. The single colored balls are called solids while the double colored balls are called stripes. For example you may have a yellow ball with the number 1 written on it, the blue and white ball will be ten and a combination of green and white is number fourteen. The normal billiard balls used in most games are smaller than the ones used for Carom. There are also billiard balls available for training. These are marked with target rings that tell the new player exactly where he or she needs to strike.

When not in use, the balls are generally stored in the ball rack. In carom, since the game is played without pockets the balls stay on the table till the end of the game. But in pocket billiards the balls that fall into the pockets, pass through a trough into a collection area where they are held for further use. Today billiard balls are made out of Phenolin resin or polyester and acrylic. These materials make the billiard balls strong enough to sustain shots without chipping or cracking. But before the introduction of synthetic polymers, billiard balls were made out of clay or wood. The rich were known to use ivory balls, but they were a far cry from the durable and colorful billiard balls available today. There are many different billiard balls. Different balls go with different games. Understanding the ones to use for which billiards game is very important.
